Blue-green algae are so called because a
pigment called phycocyanin, which masks the
green chlorophyll in most species. The cells
of these algae are usually larger and more
complex than bacterial cells, though they
never have flagella of any sort and often
grow in long chains or filaments. They
photosynthesize like higher plants to extract
energy from the sun, during which they
release oxygen.
